Pack Member of the Month

"Keoke"

Keoke

This magnificent animal has gone through several name changes as well as a wonderful personality change. He came to the Refuge with the name of Lycaon, an infamous member of Greek mythology known for horrific deeds. I changed his name to Titan. In Greek mythology the Titans were immortal giants of incredible strength and knowledge. This description fits him much better. Our wonderful volunteer Dawnie who spent most of her early years in Hawaii renamed him Keoki - a common Hawaiian name.

Keoke

In his time here at the Refuge he has lived in several different enclosures with a variety different pen-mates. There was a time in his life when he had some occasional aggressive behaviors. He now resides with the "house gang." These are ones who get to reside on the couches in the house and watch TV with me. He is now truly a huge "lovebug." Him and his girl Catori love me with a huge appetite for affection. Whoever gets to me first gets their dose of lovin'. The other politely waits their turn.

Keoke

This month he will celebrate his 10th birthday. He is still quite active and energetic and is quite healthy for his age. We hope his health and personality will remain for many years to come.

To celebrate Keoke , his Adopt-a-Wolf Packet is on special the entire month of October. Help Keoke care for his pack by making this $20.00 donation today.

Letter from Our Director

by Bill Chamberlain

If you look back at how our government has managed all our natural resources you have to wonder, "How did these "representatives" get into office? Our water - our air - our food - our forests - our wildlife are all in serious peril due to significant governmental mismanagement. Science has been ignored in favor of the money and political influences of powerful special interests. THIS MUST STOP !!! This behavior permeates throughout virtually all aspects of our government.

In specific - wolves! I have been fighting for wolves for over 30 years. In that time I have met many dedicated and energetic "wolf warriors fighting in the wolf war." These people are very professional, influential and science-based. They were a significant force in the movement but due to their inability to get our government to listen to all sides of the issues many have given up. I HAVE NOT !!! There has never been any species that has caused so much emotional and political controversy as the wolf.

With the upcoming election there has been very little discussion about the environment. The only topics covered have been about the burning of fossil fuels and the international efforts to reduce it. This is good media for the candidates but in the short-term it will have little or no effect.

I want to take this opportunity to ask 2 things of all of you. First when you enter the voting booth think about the world we now have and the one we are leaving to future generations. Secondly let those officials we do elect know that you are expecting them to act in accordance with the wishes of those constituents who voted them into office. THANKS !!!

The U.S. Wolf Refuge Will Not Be At The Wildlife Conservation Networks Expo

Our attendance at WCN Expo has been a yearly event of ours for 8 years. Due to something out of our control we will not be there this year. As many of you know my friend Jane Goodall speaks at this momentous event every other year. Fortunately 2016 is a year that she will not be there. Rest assured we will be there next year.

Wolf Awareness Week

October 16 - October 22, 2016

This is a national event that is intended to publicize the wolf controversy and the travesty of how they are being (mis)managed. I want to ask all of you to send an email, letter or phone call to your senators and legislators. Let them know that are seriously concerned about how all our natural resources are being managed. If you want any suggestion on what to write or what to say, contact me and I'll send plenty of suggestions. THANKS!!

Are You a Veterinarian?

All Creatures Great & Small

All Creatures Vet Hospital here in Reno, NV urgently needs a licensed vet to help in meeting the overwhelming demands of their expanded practice. A recent departure by Dr. Cruz for personal reasons has left the hospital with a heavy workload for the remaining staff.

This clinic is an enjoyable work environment that works on all animals - not just traditional pets. It is a fun, light, cohesive place to work that is equipped with virtually all the lab equipment necessary to make fast, thorough diagnosis and treatments.

New Enclosure Update

Tholl Fence

Thank you all for voting for us at the ArtPaws event in Reno this past July. The proceeds we won went to purchase the 500 feet of 10' high chin link fence. A big Thank You goes out to Josh, Brittany, Mike and Lorna for all their hard work in making this happen. Also a big thank you also goes to Tholl Fence for providing all the fence for this enclosure. All the burial fence is in the ground and all the fence posts are set in concrete. About 200' of the fence is now in place. This enclosure is estimated to be about 3 acres. It will be the new home for Nahini, Lobo and Lokahi. We want to get Lokahi out of his present enclosure before winter. He truly deserves the freedom this big enclosure will give him.

If your want to join us in the hard work of constructing this beautiful pen contact me at bill@uswolfrefuge.org.

Winter is Approaching - Our Bulldozer Still Does Not Work

Our old bulldozer is our lifeblood during the winter. The U.S. Wolf Refuge exists at 6500' elevation and winters here are heaven for wolves but often difficult for us humans. Our ¼ mile long driveway has some very steep sections that cause problems during rainy and snowy weather. Our bulldozer enables us to get in and out.

broken bulldozer

It is a 1984 Fiatallis FD5 that runs fine but does not steer. We have had numerous heavy equipment mechanics but nobody has fixed it. These mechanics have cost us thousands of dollars. Without it we are interested in putting material on the driveway that will make it more passable in rough weather. To do this we will need a dump truck or a dump trailer for a week. PLEASE HELP US
