With heavy hearts we tell everyone that tragedy has once again stricken our small sanctuary. On Friday February 12th at feeding time our senior pack member Cherokee was up and about and anxiously awaiting his food. But, the following afternoon, Saturday February 13th, he was gone. He was found curled up and still under his favorite tree. He had crossed the Rainbow Bridge sometime earlier that day. Cherokee was 13 years old. We find some solace in that he appears to have just gone to sleep and never woke up.
We watched Cherokee blossom after the loss of his pen-mate Shiloh a few years ago into a totally different, more confident and happy boy who was, for the first time, thoroughly enjoying his life and the freedom he was given within one of our very large enclosures with Shadow and Nala ... much more laid-back room-mates than Shiloh had ever been. Shiloh was a true Alpha female, and Cherokee the Omega. We will miss Cherokee dearly.
We love all of our animals, but the ones like Cherokee, that have been with us for most of their lives hold an extra special place in our hearts. Cherokee's story is still on the "The Wolves" page of our website if you'd like to read about him.
On a happier note, please visit the U.S. Wolf Refuge booth on Saturday March 19th & Sunday March 20th. at the 7th ANNUAL RENO PET SHOW at the Reno Sparks Convention Center. The event hours are 11am-7pm on Saturday and 11am-5pm Sunday. Meet our Ambassador Wolf-Dog KASA and speak with U.S. Wolf Refuge Director Bill Chamberlain about our facility and volunteer opportunities.
This event is open to many animal rescue groups as well as veterinarians and other animal related businesses. It offers you a wonderful day of entertainment for the whole family.
UPDATE ON "LOBO"
We would like to send out a huge THANK YOU to all of the wonderful people that stepped up to donate towards Lobo's surgery costs. The help is very much appreciated! His tumor was successfully removed from his leg and after a brief stay at the boarding facility at our veterinarians office where they monitored him carefully after surgery, 13 year old Lobo is back home with Nahini. His former owner was notified about his impending surgery and she told us that he is actually 13 years old, not 12 so we'll be correcting our website.
Pack Member of the Month
Cheyanne, who is now almost 5 years old, joined the U.S. Wolf Refuge pack on September 27, 2012. This sweet energetic girl came to us from Wasco, CA where she was captured by Wasco Animal Care and Control where she was running loose. We have found that her running loose was no surprise. Her ability to warm your heart is only exceeded by her ability climb fence. The humane but secure confinement here at the Refuge has proven no match for even the greatest of "escape artists" but Cheyanne showed us they were not 100% escape proof. Since being at the refuge she has settled in and is quite comfortable in her new life. Her inclination to climb fence has vanished and she now runs and plays incessantly.
Cheyanne is available for adoption into the right home but in the meantime, this little angel will be enjoying her life at the refuge and has shown promise of possibly sharing some of the "ambassador" duties for local public appearances with Kasa and Takoda.
This March is all about celebrating "Cheyanne". Her Adopt-a-Wolf packet will be on special the entire month of March for a reduced donation amount. You can celebrate
with us by purchasing her Adopt-a-Wolf packet helping her care for her Pack.
